Setting up a portable Wake-on-LAN (WOL) tool allows you to turn on computers remotely without installing heavy software. This guide covers how to configure your computer’s hardware and use a portable utility to send the magic packet. Step 1: Enable WOL in the BIOS/UEFI

Before using any software, you must configure your computer’s motherboard to accept wake-up signals while powered down. Shut down your target computer and turn it back on.

Press the setup key (usually F2, F10, or Delete) to enter the BIOS/UEFI menu. Navigate to the Power Management or Advanced tab.

Look for settings named Wake-on-LAN, Power On By PCI-E, or Remote Wake-up. Change the status to Enabled. Save the changes and exit to boot into Windows. Step 2: Configure Your Network Adapter

Windows must also be instructed to keep the network card active when the system is shut down. Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager. Expand the Network adapters section.

Right-click your wired Ethernet adapter and select Properties. Go to the Power Management tab. Check the box for “Allow this device to wake the computer.”

Check the box for “Only allow a magic packet to wake the computer.”

Go to the Advanced tab, find Wake on Magic Packet, and set it to Enabled. Step 3: Find Your Target Network Details

Portable WOL applications require specific network identifiers to target the correct machine. Open Command Prompt on the target computer. Type ipconfig /all and press Enter. Locate your active Ethernet adapter.

Note down the Physical Address (MAC Address), which looks like 00-11-22-33-44-55. Note down the IPv4 Address and the Subnet Mask. Step 4: Download and Run Portable WakeOnLan

Portable applications run instantly from a USB drive without modifications to the host registry.

Download a lightweight, portable WOL executable (such as NirSoft WakeMeOnLan or WakeOnLAN Portable).

Extract the ZIP file directly to your local drive or a USB flash drive.

Launch the application by double-clicking the executable file.

Click the “Add” or “New Computer” button within the interface.

Enter the MAC address and IP address you collected in Step 3.

Click “Send Packet” or “Wake Up” to power on the remote machine.
